Hi, I just joined this tribe. Wanted to introduce myself. I'm currently working with Slim Russell and others on creating a Web and print guide of Oakland arts & culture. I've recently begun my research on Oakland's history and evolution in this regard and would love tips on where to find good information. I'm currently looking at Oakland Heritage and have a meeting next week with Annalee Allen, who is the coordinator for the tours program at City Hall. She has written many interesting articles about Oakland landmarks in the Montclarion, and has also published a fanastic book of old Oakland postcards.

Anyway, it's great that Spokes of a Hub has a presence on Tribe! I've a relative newcomer to the Bay Area, but I've fallen madly in love with Oakland and really look forward to digging in and making a nice nest here. Would also love to join forces with other nests. You can find out more about me at this site: www.redlucite.org

Thanks, and I hope to get to know you all better in the near future! :)

    Hi Luce and welcome;

    It sounds like a great project that you and Slim are working on, and much needed! I think it might be helpful if you can say a bit more about the scope of the guidebook that you two are working on, as there are other efforts underway for various resource guides etc. pertaining to arts and culture in Oakland. Coordination is good!!

    I hope that you're enjoying getting to know Oakland - it's a great and vibrant city.

    Cheers,

    Lori Zook

      Hi Lori,

      Slim actually mentioned you today and told me a little about your involvement with the Oakland Metro :) The guidebook/site will present all public art pieces in Oakland in the context of the city's history and culture. They will be categorized by districts as well as types (city-funded, private, "plop"). The web presentation will also include local artists and their bios, as well as updated portfolios. We plan to have lots of hyperlinks that make all kinds of direct sources pertaining to Oakland arts more visible, creating an aggregate of information...

      I agree, coordination is so important. There seem to be many people who are really dedicated to preserving and enriching Oakland's rich history + culture. I'm really excited to be part of this project and would love to collaborate with others on many levels.

    Is this a historical project or a contemporary one?

    I know that Christian Frock, who curates over at Pro Arts is working on a guide to current Bay Area arts spaces.

      Mostly contemporary, but each district and art piece will have a short blurb on history pertaining to them.

      Thanks, I will mention Christian to Slim and see if we can coordinate with him on certain things (esp. if he's covering Oakland).

      Thanks, Hyland. I am meeting up with Jeff tomorrow. It is too bad their space is being closed down. Has Jeff gotten in contact with any of you yet? I know that the issue at hand has to deal with code violations. Actually, there is a more detailed explanation up on their site right now:
