hello, i was reaading one of the threads and it made mention of liminals troubles. Um, I guess I was wondering what exactly those troubles are as they pertain to "word on the street". I live here and oh yes there have been troubles. Enough troubles for an underground afterschool special. I've heard some rumours, some even that pertained to me which was troubling at the time but that time has thankfully passed. I am one of two new leaseholders and without slandering a certain very mean someone it was about damn time. We face some serious challenges ahead as we all do as artists and patrons of art. More selfishly focused on my home though is this: we got screwed. We got screwed and nobody knows our story because its being promoted otherwise and we're still in jeopardy of losing this venue. I have been so fucked here by the very same people that supposedly are working to revive and/or nurture the artist community here in Oakland and I'm still fighting to save it. Before last month however I couldn't have done this but now I can and I will. I just ask for information, advice, suggestions, help. I offer this venue for what its worth, and any other quality whichI possess as an artist and dedicated hardworking motherfucker.
I meant this to be an introduction and turned out to be some unspecfic ramble. But we have one week to raise $1400. Or were shut down and it's not our fault or the landlord's. Its the critics and social thugs that have jeopordized the liminal. Please help me save our home.
things I'm currently working on as it relates to our "problems"
renting the four rooms recently vacated. The tenants didnt give notice just fled the premises after we secondhandly heard that the master tenent was served with a 3-day or quit. It stated that three months of the rent they had paid never quite made it to the owner of the building. So what else was he supposed to do? Then the master tenent recieved a notice of abondenment after failing to respond to the 3-day or quit. We only knew about that because they taped it to our front door. After negotiations myself and my roomate Hick managed to pay half of this months rent which put us on the lease that had been defaulted upon. And still not a word from the guy who stole our money.
2. Events I have the month of August booked every weekend. The proceeds will go directly to any roomate that participates (currently there are only 4 of us left.) Before this no one other than the master tenent was allowed to throw or host events. When I finally challanged that they called the police on me. Not very nice me thinks.
3. Starting a late night diner in house for creative types. think of it as a speakeasy for food (like grilled cheese sandwiches), coffee and consideration.
4.Flea market to be held every other saturday.
5. Still life drawing classes set to music. (yes I stole the idea from lobot)
6. A vending machine for the building to use. Inside will be art supplies, some music stuff like strings and drum heads and maybe a cold beverage or two.
7. A real honest to goodness artist gallery thats open to the public. Its going to be called "insert gallery here".
Well thats jsut a few things, I'm also working on a 60foot mural and trying to raise money by working as a freelance web designer. I dont know why I decided to tell anyone any of this, but whatever I did and I guess I'll just suck it up hope for the best and press send...

Re: the post.liminal says hi and we need some help
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 10:30 AMHello there, Gabriel
I think the liminal troubles mentioned to in the other thread referred to noise issues and neighborhood complaints about events at liminal, that tended to result in police presence and events getting shut down and threats of fines, arrests, etc.
I haven't heard anything about this current problem, and I wish you luck in raising the money. I can't say I haven't there been myself.

Re: the post.liminal says hi and we need some help
Mon, July 11, 2005 - 8:54 PMthank you. and me and Hick are really trying.
also....I dont want to throw a benifit like we have had in the past or how many still do. I'd rather throw a benifit to money for after scholl programs and what not. But I'm certain something will turn up. August is booked. But until then its going to be one wild weird wek of finagaling. Luckly and I use that word with great trepidation I worked in the financial district for 10 + years and have learned a great deal from the other side of the coin.
On another note I wanted to know what it takes to show art work at the 21 grand gallery? I was showing in San Francisco at an anonsalons other venue 111 townsend but they had some proplems of thier own with the local 5-O. So I have all these new painting and I'd like to start showing my work. I have about a third on my website www,liminalmedia.com and I have others not posted there in my tribe photos. Please let me know if you get the time to share some of your guidlines.
Thanks,

Why not throw a benefit for your own venue? If you perceive it as worthwhile and an important resource then certainly it's worth people kicking down talent and money. And if you don't perceive what you're doing as such ...
I'd guess most of us here on this tribe got into the arts admin game because we wanted to present art. I doubt I'm the only other reluctant self-promoter here ... but as the rest of these fine folks can surely attest, it's something you got to do. If you're not out there telling people (and the power that be) that what you're doing is valuable and important, who else is going to do it?
